Why can’t I download images from an in-app browser?

Learn why image downloads fail in in-app browsers and what to do instead.

Updated over a week ago

When you open a link from a social media app on your phone, it may open inside an in-app browser instead of your device’s default browser. Image downloads do not work in in-app browsers, so you won’t be able to download or save the image properly from there.

To help with this, a pop-up message will appear to let you know that downloads do not work in in-app view, along with an option to open the page in your device’s browser.

If you see this message, follow the prompt to open the page in your external/default browser before downloading the image.

If no pop-up appears, you can still do this manually in one of the following ways:

  • If you opened the link from a social media app (such as Instagram, X, or Facebook), tap the menu (usually or the share icon) and select Open in external browser or Open in Chrome (label may vary).

  • If that option isn’t available, copy the link and paste it directly into your browser, then try downloading again.
