School email addresses often close on a predictable schedule, for example after graduation or at the end of a teaching posting. If yours is about to close, you can switch your grant to a different eligible academic email while your current grant is still active.
How switching works
While your current grant is still active, you can switch it to a different eligible academic email on the same account. When you do, your current grant ends and a new 12-month grant starts right away, on the same account.
Your new academic email becomes permanently bound to your account, in the same way your original address was, and it uses one of your 4 grant periods. Your old academic email keeps its own history. It doesn't get freed up for use on another account.
This only works before your grant expires
Switching is only possible while your grant is still active. Once your grant's expiry date passes, there's no live grant left to switch, and your Campaign analytics are already gone. At that point, a brand-new application is your only option, and it uses another grant period.
This makes the 14-day window before your expiry date, described in How do I extend my grant each year?, your best opportunity to switch if your academic mailbox is about to close.
Not the same as changing your login email
Switching your grant to a new academic email is different from changing your account's login email or unlinking a Google account. Those changes don't affect your grant at all. Read Does changing my login email or unlinking Google affect my grant? if that's what you're looking to do.
